Modern Art in the Swiss Mountains

Modern Art in the Swiss Mountains

As travel goes, it’s never complete until we add art. Well, it’s not complete for us. In our recent trip to Switzerland, a little gem popped up on our radar. The Gianadda Foundation! This little art space in Martigny, Valais, Switzerland, away from tourists and away from the day-to-day, brings you so much joy at every turn. The garden showcases internationally renowned artists in an idyllic setting, among trees, around a little lake, and cobblestone paths, on a background of Swiss mountains… and the inside hosts exhibitions of work by Toulouse-Lautrec, Cezanne, Monet, Zao Wou-Ki, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, and now Pierre Soulages.

This is a not to miss art destination for your next Swiss adventure!

The Foundation is proudly showcasing temporary exhibitions, as well as permanent ones, in their inside space which doubles as a concert hall, and in their garden which is populated by sculptures by renowned artists like Marc Chagall, Alicia Penalba, Constantin Brâncuși, Auguste Rodin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henry Moore, Robert Indiana, Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, and Niki de Saint Phalle, to name a few among the greats.

Pierre Soulages – A Retrospective

The current exhibition is Pierre Soulage, and it’s a masterpiece after a masterpiece, on walls that look like they’ve craved those paiting their entire existence.  In 2014 François Hollande, then President of France, described him as “the world’s greatest living artist.” Pierre Soulage is a master of Modern Art, and his works have a tendency of transporting you to another dimension, where the color black reigns supreme.
